Yukiya Izumita est né à Rikuzentakata, dans la Préfecture d’Iwate, au Nord du Japon. Il apprend la poterie Kokuji-yaki auprès du maître Gakuho Simodake, jusqu’en 1995, année durant laquelle Izumita établit son propre four à Noda-mura, dans la préfecture d’Iwate.

L’artiste est très influencé par son territoire, connu pour son climat tempétueux. Les ravages causés par le tsunami de 2011 (au cours duquel l’artiste perd sa maison), marquent profondément son oeuvre et son rapport aux phénomènes naturels. Yukiya Isumita travaille ainsi l’argile de sa région dans des formes, des lignes, des courbes, qui révèlent une perception toute particulière de son environnement, à la fois marin et terrestre.

La série Sekisoh Layers, qu’il commence en 2022, témoigne du travail exceptionnel de l’artiste sur l’argile, et de sa relation à la nature. Il modèle ainsi la matière de sorte à créer des couches d’une finesse exceptionnelle, étirées à l’extrême, quasiment déchirées, emplies d’une tension sous-jacente, à l’instar de vagues se repliant sur elles-même.

L’ensemble forme un équilibre remarquable, avec des œuvres aux lignes tout à la fois hasardeuses et raffinées.

Par ailleurs, l’artiste bénéficie d’une reconnaissance à la fois nationale mais également internationale, puisqu’on retrouve ses oeuvres au sein des collections de la Yale University Art Gallery, du Philadelphia Museum of Art, du Los Angeles County Museum of Art, au Musée d’art d’Iwate, ainsi qu’au Conseil de l’éducation de la ville de Tokonomae et l’Institut d’art de Minneapolis
