Description

The great Hindu god Śiva is represented here as the master of knowledge. Majestically sitting under a banyan tree, he crushes the dwarf of ignorance with his right foot. Ascetics surround him, attentive to his teaching. This very impressive granite work is characteristic of South India. One can only admire the sculptor’s ability to give a lot of power to this piece despite a rock that is extremely difficult to cut.

Provenance: Private collection, United States.
