Description

Born in 1946 in Sapporo, Ogawa Machiko studied crafts at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, before specializing in ceramics at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliquées et des Métiers in Paris. She then studied in Burkina Faso until 1975, which had a profound impact on her creations.
Her creations reflect her interest not only in minerality and rock, but also in the blending of materials. The delicacy of a translucent glaze blends with raw, sharp rock, creating a highly modern effect with a universal aesthetic. Her works, similar to relics, recall the beauty of time and offer a reflection on the importance of memory.
Ogawa is one of six women to have been awarded the Japan Ceramic Society Prize (2001), and was the first woman admitted to the prestigious ceramics department of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music – a true pioneer for female ceramic artists. She also received the 58th Minister of Education and Culture Award for Fine Arts in 2008 and the Tomo Museum Award for Excellence in 2010.

Exhibition: The work presented was exhibited at the Toyota Municipal Art Museum, during the Machiko Ogawa: Archetypal Vessels exhibition, from December 17 to 25, 2011.
